Bradwin Roper, the CEO of mobile network operator MTN South Africa’s fintech division, is set to step down from his position to pursue new opportunities, effective October 2024. Roper’s departure comes after a year of leadership in which the division experienced significant innovation and expansion.

In a statement confirming Roper’s intended departure, MTN South Africa attributed the success of its fintech division to Roper’s leadership, highlighting his role in driving innovation and advancing financial technology in South Africa. CEO Charles Molapisi expressed gratitude for Roper’s contributions and stated the company’s commitment to continuing its fintech initiatives under new leadership.

MTN South Africa has initiated the search for Roper’s successor, with plans to announce the appointment in due course. The company aims to find a candidate who can build upon Roper’s achievements and drive further growth and innovation in the fintech space.

MTN South Africa’s expansion into fintech has been notable, with the launch of app-based business payment capabilities, virtual wallets, and international remittance services in September of the previous year. This strategic move aligns with the broader initiatives of the MTN Group, which serves a subscriber base of 290 million and boasts 60 million active monthly mobile money users across Africa.

The partnership between MTN Group and payments giant Mastercard has further facilitated the expansion of fintech services, including SME payment acceptance solutions, MoMo wallet offerings, and remittance services, across 13 markets. Mastercard’s investment in MTN Group’s fintech business underscores the significance of the collaboration in driving financial inclusion and innovation in the region.

As MTN South Africa prepares for a leadership transition in its fintech division, the company remains committed to advancing its fintech initiatives and delivering innovative financial services to its customers across Africa.
