Euronext Chooses Insurance Chief For Succession

European stock exchange operator Euronext has selected Dutch insurance executive David Knibbe as its next chief executive, preparing for its first leadership change in more than a decade. The appointment, announced on 2 November, follows Stéphane Boujnah's decision to step down in May 2027 after overseeing a period of acquisitions and expansion across European capital markets.
Knibbe currently leads NN Group, the Netherlands-based insurance and asset management business, where he has served as chief executive since 2019. His proposed appointment follows a selection process overseen by Euronext's supervisory board. Directors highlighted his experience managing a heavily regulated financial institution, overseeing organisational integration and leading technological transformation. The nomination requires approval from relevant regulators, Dutch authorities and shareholders.
Boujnah became Euronext's chief executive in 2015 and subsequently led acquisitions that expanded the exchange group's presence across Europe. Its markets now include Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, Milan, Oslo, Paris and Athens. The business has also diversified into clearing, market data and other services, reducing its dependence on traditional equity trading. Boujnah's departure therefore marks the end of a period in which Euronext substantially broadened its operations.
Knibbe will inherit responsibility for maintaining that expansion while strengthening the company's role in integrating European capital markets. His experience in insurance provides familiarity with financial regulation and institutional investment, although exchange infrastructure presents different commercial challenges. The planned succession offers Euronext an opportunity to preserve strategic continuity while preparing its next phase of growth under new leadership.
