Gabor Cselle, co-founder and former CEO of Pebble—a startup once aimed at rivalling Twitter (now X)—has joined OpenAI, signalling a new chapter in his entrepreneurial journey. As announced in a post on X, Cselle confirmed his role at OpenAI, which began in October, and hinted at a confidential project. “Will share more about what I’m working on in due time,” Cselle wrote, adding that his time at OpenAI has already been an enriching learning experience.

A seasoned tech innovator and repeat founder, Cselle has a history of impactful ventures and strategic exits. His first startup, reMail, a Y Combinator-backed mobile email application, was acquired by Google, marking his initial move into Silicon Valley’s major league. Cselle’s second venture, Namo Media, specialised in native advertising and caught the attention of Twitter, which acquired it prior to Elon Musk’s ownership and rebranding of the platform to X.

Cselle’s connections to Twitter run deep. He worked as a group product manager at the company nearly a decade ago, focusing on user onboarding, the home timeline, and logged-out experiences. He departed Twitter in 2016 for Google, where he took on a leadership role at Area 120, Google’s experimental incubator designed to cultivate and launch tech spin-offs.

In 2022, Cselle embarked on a new venture with Michael Greer, former engineering head at Discord, co-founding Pebble—originally named T2. Pebble’s microblogging service is centred on a safety-first approach, intending to foster a secure and well-moderated digital community. Although it drew a dedicated user base and backing from notable investors such as Android co-founder Rich Miner, Pebble faced growth challenges and ultimately shut down in October. However, it resurfaced in November as a Mastodon instance, pivoting to align with the federated social media ecosystem.

Between his departure from Pebble and joining OpenAI, Cselle engaged with South Park Commons, a tech accelerator where he explored generative AI innovations, including a nod to the interactive trivia platform HQ Trivia. This period allowed Cselle to further expand his expertise in AI, a field where he now brings his experience to OpenAI.

Cselle’s move to OpenAI comes just as Anthropic, a competing AI research firm, secured Alex Rodrigues, founder of autonomous trucking company Embark, as an AI safety researcher. The high-profile hiring highlights the intensifying competition for top-tier talent as firms like OpenAI and Anthropic seek to address AI’s complex challenges while advancing their competitive edge.

Cselle’s entry into OpenAI adds a new layer of intrigue, especially given his broad experience in product development and the social media landscape. As he settles into his role at OpenAI, the tech community will be watching closely to see what innovations may emerge from this latest convergence of expertise in artificial intelligence.
