Brian Niccol, the new CEO of Starbucks, has pledged to steer the coffee giant back to its roots as the nation's "community coffeehouse." In an open letter posted Tuesday, Niccol acknowledged that Starbucks has drifted from its core values, particularly in the U.S., where the focus has shifted toward mobile app to-go orders, especially during the pandemic.

Niccol, formerly the CEO of Chipotle, took over after Starbucks ousted Laxman Narasimhan, whose tenure saw sluggish sales and a declining stock price. Niccol plans to address customer dissatisfaction, citing issues like long wait times, inconsistent product quality, and overwhelming menus.

"These are opportunities for us to do better," Niccol stated.

Wall Street has responded positively to his leadership, with Starbucks shares rising 18% since his appointment in mid-August. Despite criticism over his use of a corporate jet, which some see as conflicting with Starbucks' sustainability goals, Niccol is recognized for turning around brands like Taco Bell and Chipotle during challenging times.

His challenge now is to restore Starbucks' community-centric identity while addressing operational issues that have hampered customer satisfaction.
